Balkrishna Doshi is a key person in the development of a modern Indian architecture that has its roots in tradition. A former associate of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn in India, he practises in Ahmedabad where he is Director of the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for Research in Environmental Design. His partners Joseph Allen Stein and Jam Rattan Bhalla are based in New Delhi.
It was Doshi who founded and first directed the Schools of Architecture and of Town Planning, later combined in the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, in the Gujarat University of Ahmedabad.
